A: At a B&B, the owner resides on property.

Q: How many VRs and B&Bs are there on O‘ahu?

A: An Internet survey in summer 2005 survey conducted by the Kauaian Institute found 1,117 Transient Vacation Rentals on O‘ahu – 945 VRs and 172 B&Bs. The survey defined Transient Vacation Rentals as single-family structures marketed on the Web as either VRs or B&Bs.

Q: Why is this number significantly lower than the 2,025 identified by the survey commissioned by the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority and state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism?

A: The Kauaian Institute survey exhaustively indexed the Web sites to eliminate duplicate listings. Many VRs and B&Bs promote themselves on multiple Web sites.

Q: What kinds of economic benefits do these vacation units bring to O‘ahu?

A: According to the Kauaian Institute, the 1,117 VRs and B&Bs identified contributed an estimated $65 million in revenue to the State. Utilizing DBEDT's Input-Output economic model to fully gauge direct and indirect economic activity of VRs and B&Bs reveals:

•  $96 million total benefit to O‘ahu.

•  $26 million in household income.

•  1,005 jobs.
